Partial Dentures

Unlike full dentures which replace all the teeth in our upper or lower jaw, partial dentures is made of denture teeth attached to a metal or acrylic framework that is resting against natural teeth. This treatment is perfect for replacing multiple teeth on the top or bottom jaw, while also being ideal for cases where a full denture treatment isn’t necessary.

The treatment can also include gum replacement, where the denture treatment includes some pink acrylic to mimic the appearance our natural gum line.

In essence, they are a removable alternative to a bridge treatment

Our Partial Denture Process

After an examination, your dentist will take some impressions of your upper and lower jaws and send them to a dental technician or dental prosthetist. The technician will fabricate a metal or acrylic framework custom-moulded to your teeth, denture teeth will be selected to suit the space(s) available and to match the colour, shape and proportion of your natural adjacent teeth. Your dentist will try in this framework and make sure it fits securely yet easy to remove and put on by you everyday. After these few easy steps, you’re free to enjoy your new teeth! That means eating, smiling and talking as usual!

Benefits of Partial Dentures

  • Your new teeth will fit in perfectly with your remaining teeth. They’ll feel comfortable and just like regular teeth.
  • You’ll feel confident to smile and talk again because you won’t have to hide your missing teeth.
  • Partial dentures prevent remaining teeth from drifting or moving in your gums, so you preserve the structure of your mouth.
  • They help to keep your facial muscles tight, so you’ll look younger.
  • They will help hold the space open where your missing tooth was and make future permanent implant/bridge option possible.

How To Care For Partial Dentures

Follow these tips for long-lasting dentures:

  • When removing your dentures, make sure you’re standing over a soft surface. If you drop them, they can chip or break.
  • You never want to let your dentures dry out. If you remove them, place them in a denture cleanser solution or in plain water. Don’t use hot water, as this can create warping
  • You should clean your dentures daily to remove any stains and food deposits. You can brush them just like regular teeth, so there’s no excuse for not keeping your dentures clean.
  • Before putting your dentures in, make sure you brush your gums, tongue and palate. This helps to remove any plaque and creates a pleasant environment for your dentures to sit in.
  • Never try and fix your dentures yourself. Even the slightest chip or bend should be repaired by your dentist, or you risk causing irreparable damage.
  • See your dentist if your dentures break, chip, crack or become loose. Don’t be tempted to adjust them yourself — this can damage them beyond repair.
